In a bold move to strengthen its position in the competitive AI landscape, Meta Platforms launched its latest generation of large language models on Saturday. The tech giant released Llama 4 Scout and Llama 4 Maverick while previewing a third model called Llama 4 Behemoth, which the company describes as "one of the smartest LLMs in the world."
"Our goal is to build the world's leading AI, open source it, and make it universally accessible," Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced in an Instagram video. "I've said for a while that open-source AI will lead the way, and with Llama 4, we're starting to see that happen."
The new multimodal AI systems can process and integrate various types of data, including text, video, images, and audio. Meta claims these models outperform competitors like Google's Gemma 3, Gemini 2.0, and Mistral 3.1 across numerous benchmarks.
The company is making both Scout and Maverick freely available as open-source software, while Behemoth remains in the preview stage. This third model is expected to feature 288 billion active parameters and nearly 2 trillion total parameters, positioning it to compete directly with industry leaders like OpenAI's GPT models.
Why was the Launch of Llama 4 Delayed?
The release comes amid reports from The Information that Meta had delayed the launch because Llama 4 initially fell short on technical benchmarks, particularly in reasoning and math tasks. The company was also concerned about its capability to conduct human-like voice conversations compared to OpenAI's models.
Meta's aggressive push into AI includes plans to spend up to $65 billion in 2025 on AI infrastructure, including new data centers and computer chips. The company has already started construction on a $10 billion data center in Louisiana.
These investments come as Meta faces pressure from investors to show returns on its AI spending while also racing against competitors like OpenAI, Google, and newer entrants like China's DeepSeek, whose models reportedly outperformed Meta's previous Llama-2.
