Welcome to Extra Mile by KnowledgeNile, an interview series where industry leaders discuss innovations, tech trends, marketing tactics, and expert insights.
Today, we are delighted to have a conversation with Andrea Zaggia, Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Piktochart, a leading design platform. The firm develops AI tools that enable professionals to visualize content instantly and easily.
Zaggia combines tech leadership with a passion for solving visual communication challenges. His journey from PHP developer to leading Piktochart has been anything but linear. Let's explore his journey so far.
Hello Andrea, we are glad to have you with us!
Your journey from a PHP developer to a technical leader is truly ace. What challenges did you face, and what key insights did you gain during this time? Also, could you share more about your responsibilities and role as the Co-Founder and CEO of Piktochart.
Ans. My journey from a PHP developer to a technical leader has been filled with both challenges and invaluable lessons. I didn’t have formal training in leadership; my growth was largely through trial and error, observing others, and self-learning. For many years, I didn't seek a leadership role and was more comfortable as an individual contributor, focusing on technical development and leading the engineering team. However, as the business evolved, it became clear that we needed a stronger leadership presence, and I had to transition from the role of CTO to CEO.
One of the biggest challenges I faced was adapting my mindset from being a problem-solver on the technical side to a strategic leader responsible for broader business outcomes. Shifting focus from writing code and building features to setting a vision, aligning teams, and driving business goals required me to develop new skills in people management, decision-making, and market analysis. I had to learn how to balance my passion for the product with the needs of the company and our users, and this required continuous learning and adaptation.
Today, my role as CEO is primarily centered around the product, ensuring we build features that deliver meaningful value to our users. But it's more than just about product development; it involves making strategic business decisions, leading people, and staying ahead of market trends. I work closely with my team of leaders to prioritize and execute the product roadmap. This collaboration is crucial because the product is an intersection of business strategy, market understanding, and user insights—both quantitative and qualitative.
Andrea, with the increasing buzz about AI-powered design tools, how does Piktochart differentiate itself from others in the market? Could you spotlight any standout features that set it apart in this regard?
Ans. At Piktochart, our approach to integrating AI-powered design tools is quite different from many others in the market. While there is a growing trend toward "text-to-image" generation, background removal, image editing, and AI-driven copywriting, we have intentionally chosen not to follow that path from the beginning. Instead, we focus on enhancing the user experience with AI in a way that satisfies “get from text to visual.”
What sets Piktochart apart is our emphasis on features that help users transform complex information into compelling visuals quickly and easily. We’ve pioneered several standout features, such as the ability to upload a document and have AI automatically convert it into an infographic or a visually appealing document. Another unique feature is our AI-powered text summarization, which distills lengthy content into concise, beautiful visuals that are easy to digest.
Our focus is on delivering a seamless experience that is fast and simple for users. In the coming months, we are excited to roll out even more pioneering features that will further differentiate Piktochart in the AI-powered design space, enhancing our ability to help users create impactful visual content effortlessly.
Why is it essential for brands to prioritize visual communication in their overall marketing strategies today? What's your take on this, Andrea?
Ans. Prioritizing visual communication in today's marketing strategies is more crucial than ever, not just for external marketing but also for internal communications.
Visuals have the power to convey complex ideas quickly and clearly, which is essential in an age where attention spans are shorter and the amount of information being consumed is greater.
At Piktochart, we've observed a growing trend where users of our AI tool leverage our platform to create short, snackable content for their LinkedIn profiles.
While long-form posts certainly have their place and can be effective, incorporating diverse content formats like carousels, mini-infographics, and other visual elements can significantly enhance engagement. These formats are especially effective in capturing attention quickly and making an impact. For brands, this means using a mix of content types to deliver value and communicate their message in ways that resonate with their audience.
How important is customization in design elements while ensuring its alignment with your content, brand identity, and marketing objectives? Could you share your thoughts on this?
Ans. At Piktochart, we understand the importance of brand consistency, which is why after users personalize their content, we provide them with a WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) editor to further refine and adjust their designs to better fit their needs. However, we are not stopping there.
In the coming months, we plan to introduce enhanced customization features that will allow users to easily change colors, adapt layouts, and modify design elements in the AI tool to align more closely with their brand guidelines.
The goal is to empower our users to create content that is not just generic but truly reflective of their brand. It’s about creating a cohesive brand experience across all channels, which is critical for effective marketing and building strong brand equity.
Andrea, you're passionate about tackling visual communication challenges. Could you share valuable tips for individuals struggling with presenting complex data visually?
Ans. When it comes to presenting complex data visually, the key is to focus on storytelling. Start by identifying the narrative or message you want to convey. What story are you trying to tell with your data?
Once you have a clear narrative in mind, select the data points that best support and illustrate that story. Avoid overwhelming your audience with too much information—focus on what is most relevant and impactful.
Choose visual elements, such as charts, graphs, or infographics, that best represent the data and make it easy to understand at a glance.
Consider the audience’s perspective and think about what will resonate with them. Use colors, labels, and annotations strategically to highlight key insights and guide the viewer’s eye to the most important parts of your visual.

Kudos! Recently, Piktochart has been recognized as a top-rated data visualization software for 2024 by Gartner Digital Markets. How does this recognition reflect the value and trust businesses put in Piktochart?
Ans. This recognition reflects how we have successfully positioned ourselves as a unique player in the market—filling a crucial gap between traditional design tools and specialized data visualization software.
While we are not a direct competitor to tools like Tableau, we cater to a distinct need in the market. Many of our users rely on Piktochart for internal reporting, where they need a user-friendly design tool that also offers robust data visualization capabilities.
The ability to create visually compelling and easily understandable reports without a steep learning curve is a key advantage of our platform. Our loyal user base understands the unique value we bring—combining design simplicity with powerful data visualization.
The tech and design landscape is growing rapidly, bringing new trends along the way. How do you stay ahead of this? What leadership qualities are essential for success in the tech industry?
Ans. To stay ahead in the rapidly evolving tech and design landscape, it's crucial to approach innovation with a humble mindset. Acknowledging that there's always room for improvement and new ideas is key to driving continuous growth.
At Piktochart, we also focus on understanding our users deeply—what keeps them loyal, what niche needs we fulfill, and how we can provide even more value to them. This user-centric approach is essential for staying relevant and competitive.
While it's important to keep an eye on the market trends, we avoid obsessing over them to prevent falling into the trap of simply replicating what others are doing. Instead, our focus is on true innovation—finding our unique differentiators and building a roadmap that aligns with those strengths.
By positioning ourselves well in the market and targeting the right audience, we ensure our efforts are both effective and efficient. And of course, this process is ongoing; it's about repeating these steps daily to stay ahead.
When it comes to essential leadership qualities in the tech industry, a few stand out:
1. Drive to innovate: A constant push towards innovation and improvement is crucial. Leaders must encourage creativity and be willing to explore uncharted territory.
2. Commitment to continuous learning: The tech landscape is always changing, so staying informed and continuously upgrading one's knowledge is vital.
3. Clear communication: Effective leaders need to communicate their vision and direction clearly to their teams, ensuring everyone is aligned and motivated to achieve common goals.
These are a few things that have helped me in my career.
